The mistaken idea that the Livery movement represents some form of secret society or group of societies has probably been sustained by the discreet and independent way in which Livery Companies govern themselves and have administered their significant charitable funds.
In order to present a more accurate picture of the scope of these charitable activities, information was collected voluntarily from all Livery Companies in 2007 under the aegis of the Lord Mayor on the premise that the Livery movement as a whole could only gain from greater openness about the breadth of the charitable support it gives in so many ways. It is estimated that together Livery Companies dispense charitable funds of more than £41 Million annually.
A condition for the creation of a new Livery Company is that the Company will attract sufficient and sustainable membership in order to fulfil its role as a fraternity for its Liverymen and to develop its charitable and other activities. The Worshipful Company of Insurers can look back on its first thirty years with some satisfaction in this regard.
