Charitable
The main, regular source of income to the Charitable Trusts comes from the contributions from Members and, unless otherwise specified by the donor, such contributions are split in an agreed percentage between our First and Second Trusts.
First Trust
Our First Trust, has as its principal objects the relief of poverty of members and the advancement of insurance or financial services education. The Trustees have made substantial donations to the Chartered Insurance Institute over many years firstly to update the computer system associated with Knowledge Services or the Library and subsequently to allow many such services to be available on line. For further information go to www.cii.co.uk and choose Knowledge Services.
Financial assistance has been provided over the past three years to a PhD postgraduate student at the University of East Anglia who has been undertaking research into windstorm damage. It is anticipated that his thesis will be available to read or download from this site later in the year.
The First Trust also actively supports the Mansion House Scholarship Scheme, details of which can be found on www.mansionhousescholars.org.uk .
Second Trust
Our Second Trust is more widely drawn as to its objects but has a much smaller capital base than the First Trust. Modest grants are made to a variety of charities, particularly those connected with the City of London or those supported by Liverymen. It is our policy to support the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity in any particular year and the Master's Chosen Charity. Donations are also made on an annual basis to the City of London Police Widows and Orphans appeal, the Sheriffs' and Recorder's Fund, and the Church of St Lawrence Jewry.
The Second Trust has recently become involved with The City Academy, an educational establishment in Southwark. Together with several other Livery Companies sponsorship is provided for annual prizes for outstanding achievement. The Insurers sponsor two History prizes. Further details can be found at www.cityacademy.co.uk choosing About the Academy and then Sponsorship Links.
Further information on either charity can be obtained from the Hon. Secretary to the Charitable Trusts on charities@wci.org.uk
