iWIN Forum 6 - Using Social Media in Business 22 September 2015
‘Using Social Media in Business’
Celebrating progress while recognising there is still much to do was a key theme at our iWIN event hosted by Xchanging and EY.
‘Using Social Media in Business’ saw more than 50 insurance professionals gather in the Xchanging Auditorium. The event reflected the growing importance for many organisations to identify their social media needs against a fast changing digital business world.
We were welcomed by Barbara Merry, Chair of iWIN who introduced principal speakers Penny Power OBE and CEO of The Business Café and Scot McKee, Founder of Birddog Ltd who shared their experiences and expertise around social media.
Barbara Merry, Chair of iWIN commented: ‘This event was very stimulating, highly topical and the themes which emerged obviously chimed perfectly with the audience who were totally engaged. We have already been asked to arrange a similar event for next year! Another very satisfying and enjoyable iWIN forum.’
Penny Power spoke about the opportunity that social media creates for businesses to connect with customers and reminded everyone that, "These channels aren't just about securing a transaction."
A lively debate followed with a panel of social practitioners headed by Charlie Thomas, the Managing News Editor at Insurance Insider included Abi Clark from Hiscox Insurance, Sophie Barnes from Xchanging and Amy Stringer from Lloyd’s Market Association. The audience heard practical social advice from both the panelists and speakers.
Scott McKee’s message was that established industries, such as insurance, seem to think that their brand loyalty is secure – that there is no pressing need to adapt to a rapidly changing social customer. I think they’re wrong. The industry will doubtless continue, but the way it operates in a social world is changing, fast. The businesses and the brands need to adopt new practices or they’ll fail. He commented ‘The men aren’t listening of course, because men never listen. But the women are.’
Sophie Barnes, Group Social Media Manager, Xchanging said ‘I was delighted to be asked to organise this event on behalf of iWIN, it is a topic that I am extremely passionate about and believe the industry needs more educating in order to build their confidence in putting social media to good use. The event was a huge success with an array of thought leaders from the digital world and we received some great feedback. I look forward to the next one.’
