Membership
Membership of the Company is limited to persons who are members of the Chartered Insurance Institute or who are eligible for such membership by virtue of being wholly or mainly engaged in the business of insurance.
To be admitted to the Freedom of the Company, a person is required to be proposed and seconded by two members of the Livery, one of whom should also be a Court Assistant or, failing this, the nomination should be endorsed by a Court Assistant.
A Membership Committee presently meets twice a year in April and October to consider nominations for admission to the Freedom and to make recommendations for membership to the Court of Assistants. Once admitted as a Freeman it is expected that the member will come forward for clothing in the Livery as soon as this is offered.
There is fine payable on acceptance as a Freeman, and a further fine on becoming a Liveryman. Additionally, Quarterage (annual subscription) is payable by all members on 1 October each year.
The total Livery of the Company is limited by its Constitution and Ordinances and the Court of Aldermen to 400. Because of that limit, the Court of Assistants intends to maintain a balanced membership representing the various age groups engaged in the Company, or Lloyd’s markets, in broking, loss adjusting, average adjusting, risk management, or in the other activities associated with the business of insurance. The Court retains absolute discretion with regard to the acceptance or refusal of an application for membership of the Company
Further information on membership can be obtained from the Clerk to the Company on clerk@wci.org.uk
