A moment in history

History was made yesterday (Tuesday 29 September) when Alderman Bronek Masojada was elected as the 698th Lord Mayor of London at the City's Common Hall, succeeding the current Lady Mayor Dame Susan Langley. For both, the Worshipful Company of Insurers is their Mother Company. This has never happened for the WCI before and is rare in the history of the City.

Speaking after the ceremony at Guildhall, Bronek said:

"It is a profound honour to be elected as Lord Mayor of the City of London.

"I will showcase the many British opportunities, persuade British and international capital to invest in those opportunities, and champion talent, both, local and global.

"Talent is a bedrock on which everything sits. If you have the talent, they will spot the opportunities and attract that capital."

The Master Insurer, Sara Fardon, addressed Common Hall to comment on the many achievements of the Lady Mayor and the support of her mayoral consort Gary.

The Lady Mayor also spoke about her year in office, remarking on the support she has received from all quarters, and of course the role Gary has played. She spoke about the power of representation and how she has realised how important it is for others to see what can be achieved and accomplished.

• Bronek will formally succeed Lady Mayor Dame Susan Langley DBE, and take office at the Silent Ceremony at Guildhall on 13 November. The annual Lord Mayor's Show will take place the following day and will be his first public engagement in office.
