Master Sara Fardon turned the spotlight on philanthropy at a packed Winter Lunch in Drapers’ Hall.
She reminded the audience of the huge contribution Livery companies make to charity every year and of the special commitment to literacy for her year as Master:
“Livery companies collectively donate over £81 million each year to education, community causes and charitable projects—a commitment that is deeply aligned with the values of our own Company.
“This year, my focus has been on education and literacy, and I am delighted that shortly you will hear directly from Civitas Schools, my nominated charity, who do extraordinary work supporting children who need it most. With the generosity of members and guests in this room, we are also making excellent progress on my second 500‑book challenge. A wonderful example of what we can achieve together.”
Justine Brian Director of Civitas Schools and Amy Ramirez, Lead Teacher at The Insurers School, were among the top table guests and both spoke about the value of the support they are receiving this year from the WCI.
The Master presented a cheque to Amy Ramirez (pictured) and urged members to contribute generously to Civitas Schools.
She also invited members and guests to celebrate the strength and diversity of the insurance industry, the Insurers Company and the wider Livery movement:
“Insurance remains one of the most inclusive industries in the City. It welcomes people of all backgrounds, skill sets and experience, many who may never otherwise have imagined themselves working in financial services. And it offers genuine career pathways, global mobility, and the chance to make a meaningful difference.
“Because at its heart, insurance is not about paperwork or policies: it is about people. It underpins economic activity, enables businesses to grow, helps communities recover, and supports innovation. Here in the City of London, the insurance market sustains an ecosystem of expertise that is rightly envied around the world.
“In many ways, that story mirrors the world of the livery companies.
“For many, the livery movement remains hidden until — almost by chance — we are invited to an event, introduced by a friend, or encouraged to apply. And then suddenly, the doors of a centuries‑old tradition open and we discover a world rich in history, fellowship, diversity and purpose.
“There are now 114 livery companies, representing both ancient crafts and modern professions. They bring together people of all ages and backgrounds, much like our own insurance sector. And just as our industry thrives on collaboration, the livery movement thrives on collective contribution. I am pleased to say that our own Worshipful Company of Insurers is in very good health, with over 540 members and a strong demographic balance.”
The Lady Mayor, Dame Susan Langley, was among the honoured guests and spoke briefly about her year and the importance of the insurance industry in supporting her Mayoralty.
