Nick Dunlop installed as Master

Nick Dunlop was installed as Master for 2022-23 at Common Hall last night.

Claire Burrell was installed as Senior Warden and Karl Jarvis as Junior Warden (both pictured with Master Nick Dunlop)

“Thank you for placing your trust in me to be the new Master of the WCI”, said Nick Dunlop in his address to the audience at Saddlers’ Hall.

“I am deeply honoured to have this title bestowed upon me. I promise that I will do my best to lead this fine company for the ensuing year and continue our development as one of the leading Modern Liveries.”

He set out how he will develop a series of connected themes for his year.

“I’ve decided on four words that we can use as guiding principles for what we do going forward. Themes that we can use for the next few years.

They are

• SUSTAINABLE

• ACCESIBLE

• VISIBLE
• ENJOYABLE

“Sustainability is important to me and it will be a theme for our Master’s Series, as well as the Food For Thought With Food dinners with other liveries and other events during the year. We will become active participants in the Livery Climate Action Group.

“We also need to run our livery as sustainable enterprise, particularly given the new economic challenges. We will review all events and work to get costs down.

“We want our industry to be Accessible for all. Led by our Senior Warden we are launching a new effort, which will be a multi -ear project to focus our education funds and efforts to ensure we bring more talent into our business.

“We want to make sure our livery is seen as a place where all are welcome and can participate, Our membership committee and iWIN are doing great work here and we will join this up better, especially by working with external partners.

“Thinking about Visibility, our new Lord Mayor Nick Lyons was eloquent on our recent Master’s Series on his feelings that insurance is hugely under-valued and misunderstood. I can only agree with this so let’s support Nick. He wants feedback and comment from practitioners. I am looking at them!

“Let’s also make ourselves more visible, as a Livery. We’ve made great strides and we’re becoming a real force. We all probably don’t know how much we already do … so we will communicate more.

“Enjoyable. Well that speaks for itself. Let’s kick off the shoes and enjoy each other’s company. Let’s be slightly less formal. Let’s make new members very welcome. Let’s all be responsible for that special feeling of inclusion and support.”

Outgoing Master, David Sales, who has served two years as a consequence of the Covid pandemic, generously thanked his fellow officers, the Clerk and her team and members for their support: “It has been such an incredible honour and privilege”, he told members.
