The Story of the Paperweight

Your glass paperweight has been hand made in the U.K.  Each one is numbered and completely unique. Captured within the glass, is a one off combination of two types of material. The first, actual stone sourced from the floor of the whispering gallery in St Paul’s Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren and an iconic landmark in the City.  The Whispering Gallery is one of the most famous features of St Paul’s, high up and surrounding the dome. 

The second, is material collected from the foreshore of the Thames, be it oyster shells, old masonry or stone.  The Thames has been a lifeline of commerce for centuries, since the City was founded around 2000 years ago.   The Lady Mayor is the Admiral of the Port of London for the year.

Captured therefore, within the glass, is truly the heart of the City and as you lift it from the box we hope that this gift gives you a real sense of the uniqueness of our home and its enduring history.

Wilkinson’s is a family business founded in 1947 and holders of a Royal Warrant.  Their glass blowers created these unique handmade lead crystal paperweights capturing the physical heart of the City.  After cooling, the bases have been ground and polished and etched with the Lady Mayor’s cypher.
